Completing a layette for a newborn is not an easy thing to do. Although at first it may not seem all that complicated, sometimes it can turn out to be quite an overwhelming challenge.
How to choose from the maze of all the suggestions the ones that actually work?
In this entry, we will take a closer look at one of the items which may or may not come in handy.
I hope that after reading this post it will be easier for you to decide whether a crib mobile is something that could be good for your little one.
A FEW FACTS ABOUT A CRIB MOBILE:
- In the first few months after birth, the thing a baby needs most is a sense of security and being close to another person.
- Initially, the baby’s eyesight is very much underdeveloped and the little one is not able to keep it on an object or follow it with their eyes.
- The ability to follow a circular motion with the eyes appears around the second or third month of life.
- During those first few months, the baby’s nervous system is still developing and it is important not to overwhelm it with too much stimuli.
WHEN AND HOW TO USE A CRIB MOBILE?
As with most things, it should be used in moderation. It’s not that a crib mobile is a bad thing, but there are some suggestions worth following when we decide to give it a try.
BE CAREFUL!
If we use a crib mobile, we should certainly be extra careful with babies who struggle with asymmetry or have a certain side preference and turn their head to one of the sides much more frequently than the other.
Why?
Because if the mobile is turned on and is spinning in one direction, it will stimulate the baby to follow the objects that spin in only one way.
In addition, when the mobile doesn’t hang in the middle – above the baby’s tummy – it can perpetuate asymmetrical body positioning or excessive bending.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT…
At this stage of development, the little baby is primarily learning about their body, so it’s good to implement activities that will help them do that into our daily routines.
My suggestions for such playtime activities are included in my e-book Physio-Baby-Gymnastics.
